What AEO and GEO Mean for Financial Advisors
A plain-English guide to answer engine optimization (AEO) and generative engine optimization (GEO), and why they matter for independent advisors and RIAs.

Two new terms, one simple idea
AEO stands for answer engine optimization. GEO stands for generative engine optimization. Both describe the same goal: making it easier for search engines and AI assistants to find, understand and accurately describe your firm when someone asks a question.
Traditional SEO focused on ranking a page in a list of links. AEO and GEO focus on the answer itself: the summary, recommendation or explanation a person reads before they ever click.
Why this matters for advisory firms
Prospective clients increasingly ask detailed questions in their own words: who works with physicians near retirement, which firms are fee-only, who specializes in equity compensation. AI tools try to answer those questions using information they can find and trust.
If your firm's specialties, location, credentials and approach are unclear or scattered across the web, it is harder for any tool to describe you accurately. Clear, consistent public information gives you a better chance of being understood.
What actually helps
Start with clarity. Your website should state plainly who you serve, where, and how you work. Educational content written or reviewed by your advisors can answer the real questions prospects ask.
Consistency across professional directories and profiles matters too, as do credible mentions from reputable third-party sources. None of this guarantees that any AI tool will include your firm, but it makes your expertise easier to find and describe correctly.
